My Poems

Discovering allergies with Hypothyroidism

I had investigations towards the end of last year as the indigestion was getting more intense and almost ended up in hospital with the pain from it. Not only was it indigestion, but I kept getting pains on the left hand side just below my stomach thinking it might have been gallstones. I had a persistent lumpy feeling in my stomach and pain also spread to my windpipe, across the top of my back between my shoulder blades and down my arms. I also had an ongoing fuzzy headache for months on end and was frightened of stopping the indigestion pills I was prescribed. The odd thing was I seemed to get this indigestion a few days a week. Some days I felt perfectly fine. I started to become a frequent visitor to the doctor but a scan revealed all was clear with my gallbladder. It wasn’t until a friend made a comment about looking to some foods I ate and out of desperation I started a diary and the very laborious task of eliminating certain foods and making a note of any type of reaction. Eventually it was obvious that I reacted to bread, including wholemeal, tortilla, pita, etc and pasta after 24 hours of eating. Everything seemed to slot into place after reading January 2006 edition of BTF magazine that some hypothyroid patients could become increasingly intolerant of wheat, grain or starchy food. Of course I was very relieved that nothing else was amiss other than worries over recent personal events, but obviously now after this I will tend to blame most things on my Hypothyroidism. But, whatever next?

Again, I do not try to understand how and why this all happens but have found that my own personal therapy has been trying to reach out to Hypothyroid people and making contacts, reading about other experiences and similarities, writing my journals and keeping photographs of some very dark days. My friend, John Holman and his suggestion of putting my journals on a website. I welcome contact from anybody with Internet access to read it and contact me through the e-mail address provided within the website. There is also a link for some of the poems that have been published over the months.

I make a conscious effort to get along with people and try to laugh off any stupid mistakes I make. I also work part time with children, which I love.

I hope in time to have the confidence to find work again in Office administration.

I still occasionally get mild symptoms of Thyroid disease and will probably continue to blame the Hypothyroidism for the rest of my life for almost anything!

Thank you for taking your time reading these journals. I hope that they will help anyone suffering from Hypothyroidism and  I welcome contact through my e mail address which can be found on the home page.
